Entry 5- Video Growing Roots

Growing Roots was about all the immigration diffrences over the years in Arkansas.  i found it intresting because it was Arkansas so its the state I live in it seemed to grab my attention better.  All the different places in the state how they have changed because of immigration and how they adjusted and some of their belifs and values.  Also i liked how they actually showed a classroom and how to use diffrent techniques to get your students involved, liked dancing and singing.  I had no idea that people from the Marshall Islands had migrated to Arkansas and has a big part of our state.  Also Hispanics and Asians have a big part of our state.  I liked hearing about what they think about our stated compared to their countires, its very intrestion to hear someone elses veiw.

Entry 4- Chapter 2

Chapter two was more confusing to me.  It talked about how to use structure in language with ESL students.  This can be difficult for an ESL student to learn English and all its rules. Also how words used to be said ( like how they look and just sound them out) compared to how we actually say them now.  This was intresting to know that things have changed and how they are so different now.  This chapter seemed more like and informative chapter nothing too exciting or nothing besides the structure of how language can be used diffrently in our language.

Entry 3- Chapter 1

In chapter one I learned alot of the acronyms and the demographic trends.  i found it intresting that all the stats that was fiven to the U.S. This being my first time ever hearing about ESL ( English as a Second Language) and ESL students, this has been so craxy how all the students that are effected.  How the effects of the students is stunning to see how they deal with all the changes going on in their lives and all the diffrent steps to take to help them transist.  All the social, emotional, and psychological factors that the students go through is very important to the teacher so they know how to handle every situation they can.

Entry 2- Video Wide Angle

In this video it was absolutely heartbreaking.  To see what all of those children go through on a daily basis is very saddening.  School and learning was very important to all of them and somewhere along the line something change and most of them could not continue their education.  To them education meant so much to them and here in the U.S. children take advantage of their education.  It was a wake up call to me to always be thankful for my education. I am lucky to have to oppurtunity to go to school.

Entry 1: Experience in the Community

An experience that I have had that caused a language and culture confusion has been this semester.  I am currently taking American Sign Language 1 (ASL 1) and on the first day of that class was so hard, I thought it was going to be the hardest thing I would ever do.
On the first day i walk into the classroom and on the board in bright, bold letter it says " THIS IS A NO VOICE CLASS". I paniked , I didn't know what to think and the teacher comes in signing and of course no one has any idea what she is saying.(SCARED FACES!!)  But as she continues we start picking up on what she was saying after repetition and watching what she did.  It actually help me learn alot using no voices. Although at first it was scary and didn't have any confidence I could do this I have already had my first test and made an A.  Some things can be confusing and hard at first but after learning about the language and the culture of the deaf community it really helped the learning process.
